France is the first to use drones for its national mail service

It's no longer surprising to see postal services experimenting with delivering mail using drones. However, France is kicking things up a notch: its national mail service will be the first to deliver packages by drone on a regular route. DPDgroup, the express courier subsidiary of the mail service, is running a test program where a hexacopter drone (not shown here) will carry packages up to 6.6 pounds along a 9.3-mile route in France's southern Provence region. These are commercial customers using dedicated spaces to collect their orders, so you can't strictly compare this to Amazon's recent home delivery in the UK. It would be considerably more challenging to deliver to individuals, who don't have the luxury of secure areas or readily available staff. However, the routine nature of the experiment is a big deal. It's a step toward using drones as an everyday aspect of mail service instead of limiting them to special occasions. DPDgroup sees this as particul...

Second Life's creator is building a 'WordPress for social VR'

For the last 13 years Linden Lab has been developing Second Life, one of the most popular virtual worlds online. It's easy to scoff at the game, with its dated graphics and simplistic activities. But it's still remarkably popular, averaging 900,000 monthly active users. Part of its appeal is the economy, which allows anyone to buy and sell virtual goods. Talented users can sense what will soon be popular, be it clothes, furniture or vehicles, and make them with 3D modelling software. They're then imported and sold on the in-game marketplace for "Linden Dollars," which can be exchanged for real-world cash. Designers made $60 million this way last year. Now, Linden Lab is applying the same approach to virtual reality. The latest headsets are packed with potential, but crafting compelling software is expensive. To make a decent VR sandbox, you need a game engine, a team of talented engineers and artists, and people to manage hosting and distribution. That'...

Google's search-savvy keyboard comes to Android: Gboard replaces the official Google Keyboard app

Ever since Google introduced its Gboard keyboard on iOS, there's been one main question: when is it coming to Android? You can relax. The company has released Gboard for its own phone platform, replacing the previous (and relatively plain) Google Keyboard app. As with iOS, the interface revolves around a search feature that not only digs up common search results (including location and weather), but also emoji and those seemingly inescapable animated GIFs. Gboard will also autocorrect in any enabled language, so you don't have to worry about making typos if you switch between languages on a frequent basis. Gboard is available now, and works with over 100 languages. Don't expect to drop GIFs into conversations regardless of the app, though. GIF sharing only works for Android users in Allo, Hangouts and Messenger right now, and sharing in other apps depends on developers integrating image keyboard support. SOURCE

GoPro compensates Karma buyers with free Hero5 cameras

We won't blame you if you're upset that GoPro had to recall your Karma drone over sudden power losses, but at least you're getting compensation for your trouble. GoPro is offering American Karma buyers a free Hero5 Black camera once they return both their drones and the accessories that came with them. That's on top of the full refund during the investigation, we'd add. While this won't completely make up for having to go droneless (or, gasp, look for an alternative), you won't have to go empty-handed -- and GoPro won't have to worry so much about customers holding on to their Karmas at all costs. Nintendo Switch

Earlier today Nintendo revealed their upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch. The device was revealed through a video that shows its dual use as a portable gaming system and a “traditional” living room console. The Nintendo Switch basically looks like a tablet that can be plugged into a dock connected to the TV. When removed from the dock, the device can then be used as a portable console. If the promotional video is to be believed, switching between the living room experience and the portable experience is seamless, meaning you can play on your big TV screen and then just plug-out the console to keep playing outside. This is certainly an interesting take on this recent problem that console manufacturers have been trying to solve. Sony’s solution for this has been remote play (you can play your PS4 games on your PS Vita or your phone), and for a limited amount of games, cross-play (Vita/PS4) and compatible save data. Nintendo’s solution with the Nintendo Switch ensures that...

Xbox One getting huge upgrade in 2017, slim model later this year

Microsoft has two new Xbox consoles on the horizon, according to reports on Kotaku that Polygon has corroborated with its own sources. Those sources also told Polygon that one of those new consoles will be over four times more powerful than the current Xbox One and that the announcement at E3 was triggered by, among other things, a faster-than-expected timeline for Sony’s own upgraded PlayStation 4. The other console, a slimmed-down version of the current hardware, will also be getting a redesigned controller. The latter is scheduled to be revealed at E3 or at an event shortly before, as plans are currently in discussion. Tom Warren at Polygon sister site The Verge reports that the console will be "40 percent smaller than the current model and will likely include 4K support," which will be for video content specifically, though the existing Xbox One models include scaling hardware to output games at various resolutions. Our sources also confirm that this will be the smalles...

Forget Apple vs. the FBI: WhatsApp Just Switched on Encryption for a Billion People

For most of the past six weeks, the biggest story out of Silicon Valley was Apple’s battle with the FBI over a federal order to unlock the iPhone of a mass shooter. The company’s refusal touched off a searing debate over privacy and security in the digital age. But this morning, at a small office in Mountain View, California, three guys made the scope of that enormous debate look kinda small. Mountain View is home to WhatsApp, an online messaging service now owned by tech giant Facebook, that has grown into one of the world’s most important applications. More than a billion people trade messages, make phone calls, send photos, and swap videos using the service. This means that only Facebook itself runs a larger self-contained communications network. And today, the enigmatic founders of WhatsApp, Brian Acton and Jan Koum, together with a high-minded coder and cryptographer who goes by the pseudonym Moxie Marlinspike, revealed that the company has added end-to-end encryption to every f...

Pangu iOS 9.1 Jailbreak & tvOS Jailbreak available!

Pangu has released some days ago a newer version of their iOS Jailbreak Tool (so called "Pangu Jailbreak") which now supports iOS 9.1 in all iPhone models. Also they release tvOS (new AppleTV 4th-gen) Jailbreak. I advice you that this Jailbreak method is not very useful, since there is no Cydia or any GUI app *YET*, but if you want to give a SSH-try, give it a show Just point to Pangu's page and download it! Follow instructions and that's it

Apple temporarily pulled back iOS update 9.3

Apple has released a new build of iOS 9.3 for the iPad 2 that likely fixes activation issues encountered by some users when updating. When updating to iOS 9.3 on older devices, users were asked to enter their Apple ID and password. However, if the user didn't remember their password the device became stuck in an inactivated state. "Updating some iOS devices (iPhone 5s and earlier and iPad Air and earlier) to iOS 9.3 can require entering the Apple ID and password used to set up the device in order to complete the software update," an Apple spokesperson told iMore. "In some cases, if customers do not recall their password, their device will remain in an inactivated state until they can recover or reset their password. For these older devices, we have temporarily pulled back the update and will release an updated version of iOS 9.3 in the next few days that does not require this step." The new build of iOS 9.3 for iPad 2 is number 13E236. Source

It’s all about precedent: Justice Department wants Apple to unlock 12 additional devices

One of the arguments the Justice Department has deployed in its bid to force Apple to bypass security protections on the iPhone is that there’s no precedent being set in the case. In a blog post to the website Lawfare, James Comey, director of the FBI, wrote: “The San Bernardino litigation isn’t about trying to set a precedent or send any kind of message. It is about the victims and justice.” I have no doubt that Director Comey and other FBI agents sincerely believe that breaking into this particular iPhone is a matter of justice. The FBI’s claims that this isn’t about precedent, however, fall flat when you consider that the organization has submitted 12 additional claims under the All Writs Act that would force Apple to unlock other devices in various cases that have absolutely nothing to do with terrorism. The list of cases runs the gamut, from devices running iOS 4.2.1, to hardware with iOS 9.1. All of these cases involve the All Writs Act, but none of the details have been m...

Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 9.2.1 to Fix Devices Bricked by 'Error 53'

Apple today released an updated version of iOS 9.2.1, exclusively available to those who use Apple's latest iPhones and iPads. The second iOS 9.2.1 update comes approximately one month after iOS 9.2.1 was first released to the public. Apple has launched the new version of iOS 9.2.1 to address the "error 53" message that some iOS users received after having their iPhones repaired by third-party services using components not sourced from the original device. These non-matching components cause the iPhone to fail a Touch ID validation check because the mismatched parts cannot properly sync. When the Touch ID validation check failed during an iOS update or restore, Apple disabled the iPhone, effectively "bricking" it in an effort to protect Touch ID and the related Secure Enclave that stores customer fingerprint information. Apple originally explained that error 53 was intentional, implemented as a way to prevent the use of a malicious Touch ID sensor that cou...

Nvidia blames Apple for GPU bug that breaks Chrome’s incognito mode

A new bug in Apple systems with Nvidia graphics cards can expose private information — but according to Nvidia, it’s not something they can fix. The issue came to light when Evan Andersen launched Diablo III on his Mac. Instead of the game’s familiar splash screen, he saw a perfect screen grab of pornography he’d been, um, reviewing at an earlier point in the day. According to Evan , the bug occurs because “GPU memory is not erased before giving it to an application. This allows the contents of one application to leak into another. When the Chrome incognito window was closed, it’s [sic] framebuffer was added to the pool of free GPU memory, but it was not erased. When Diablo requested a framebuffer of it’s [sic] own, Nvidia offered up the one previously used by Chrome. Since it wasn’t erased, it still contained the previous contents. Since Diablo doesn’t clear the buffer itself (as it should), the old incognito window was put on the screen again.” Andersen then wrote a program that ...
